Can extra credit hurt your grade? ›

Extra credit assignments will NOT negatively impact a student's grade. If an assignment is marked Extra Credit, only awarded points are included in the grade calculation. If a student gets a zero for example, the lack of points granted or earned will not count against the student.

Depending on the district, students may also have opportunities for extra credit. They can improve their GPA by completing additional assignments or making corrections. Working with a tutor is an excellent way for students who need extra support to boost their grade point average.

Bad grades? It happens. But one poor test, month, or quarter doesn't have to sink your GPA. You can still end the semester where you want to be—if you take action now.

Example: Student's overall grade is 90% for all categories (Test, Homework, Project) and they get a 92% on the next test. However if their test average is 100% then the weighted average for the Tests category will go down and therefore their overall grade will go down as well.

Your current GPA is 3.0, so your total grade points (before the F) would be 3.0 44 = 132 grade points. If you receive an F in a 4-credit hour class, that's 0 grade points added to your total. So, your new total grade points would be 132.

On a 4.0 scale, an A equals 4.0, a B equals 3.0, a C equals 2.0, a D equals 1.0, and an F equals 0.0. However, some high schools report student GPAs on a 5.0 scale instead. When schools use a 5.0 scale, a 4.5 GPA on a 5.0 scale is the equivalent of a 3.5 GPA on a 4.0 scale.

When you fail a course, the grade you receive is often an F, which carries no grade points. As a result, failing a course can significantly lower your GPA, especially if it is worth several credits. For example, if you have a 3.5 GPA and fail a 4-credit course, your GPA will drop to 3.08.

It Can Motivate Students

One reason teachers choose to offer extra credit is to increase student motivation. If students are given the opportunity to earn a few extra points on their own terms (instead of being required as with regular assignments), they may have more incentive and motivation to do so.

Extra credit assignments should be just that – extra. Students' focus should be on the primary course material and scheduled exams and assignments. Any bonus assignment that diverts their attention away from regular coursework is probably doing more harm than good.

Sometimes, when you give a student 100% for an assignment, this can actually cause their overall average to drop! Don't panic, the gradebook and weighting form are working correctly. Before a grade is entered for an assessment, its weighting value is not being calculated with the rest of the values in the gradebook.
