Can you shower when the power is out? ›

Most plumbing does not require electricity so thankfully your toilet will still work! The downside to a power outage is that if you have to shower, keep it short! The water heater only holds so much hot water and some citywide systems use electricity to pump sewage to facilities so it could get backed up quickly.

To find out if there is a power outage in your area, go to the Outage Tracker Map and enter your address in the search bar. The map will show if there is an outage in your area and the number of customers affected. You can also view an interactive map to see if your area is affected by a power outage.

When the outage has been resolved and service has been restored, you'll receive this message: “The assigned crew has reported that power has been restored. If your location is still without power, please report the outage by replying 'OUT', using the GLE app, your online account, or calling 1-888-485-2573.”

Depending on the amount of water remaining in the pipes, you might be able to flush your toilet several times while the power is out. Eventually, however, your tank won't fill up anymore because the pumps are down. When this happens, you will need to flush your toilet manually by pouring in a bucket of water.

Fill the Tub

Your city water supply is likely to go down as soon as the power goes out. Therefore, you might experience a water shortage in your home. Also, natural disasters like flood might contaminate water, making it unsafe during a power outage. It would be wise to fill your bottles, buckets and tub with water.

Average Duration of Power Outages

On average, most technical or minor outages in the USA last about 1-2 hours. However, those caused by major natural disasters can extend for days or even weeks.

As the USDA notes in Keeping Food Safe During an Emergency, your refrigerator will keep food safe for up to 4 hours during a power outage. Keep the door closed as much as possible. Discard refrigerated perishable food such as meat, poultry, fish, eggs, and leftovers after 4 hours without power.

No lights or other electrical appliances working is usually a first indication that you have no electricity. Looking up your street to see if neighbors have lights, at night, is a first check on the power in the area. In my area our power company has an outage map that shows whether there is an outage.

If no switches are tripped, but you still don't have power, you may need to replace the circuit breaker or breaker box; this can be an indication of either faulty wiring or a mechanical fault with the breaker switch.

We also say: The electricity went out. The electric lines are down. (If they are the old fashioned electric lines on electric poles.) I do not think we would say "cut off" unless the city or power company deliberately cut off the electricity due to the dangerous situation.

If you see a downed power line, assume it is energized and stay away. Call 9-1-1 immediately to report its location, and then call PG&E at 1-800-743-5002. Do not touch anyone or anything in contact with a downed power line. Keep children and pets away from fallen electric wires.

All water heaters use electricity for some of their functions. Natural gas based water heaters generate their own electricity, but electricity-based water heaters must have the power supplied. No power means no hot water. If you have heated water in a tank, it may stay warm for a little while after the power goes out.

The short answer is yes, as long as you don't mind using cold water. Shutting off the input to your water heater will not affect your home's main water supply. You can still run appliances like your washing machine or dishwasher, flush your toilet, and use your shower, sink, or garden hose.
