Can level 2 autism live a normal life? ›

By providing supportive services and exploring non-invasive treatment options, individuals with Level 2 Autism can lead fulfilling lives and reach their full potential.

Those with mild autism traits are typically able to live independently, get an education, hold a job, and so on. This is not to say that autism with low support needs won't come with some challenges, but ensuring proper support can help set an autistic person up for success.

For parents of such children, communication is a problem that compounds the stress & anxiety of parents. Parents face the challenge that their child is unable to communicate their needs and wants. With children at times unaware of nonverbal communication and cues, the challenges of parenting get compounded.

Many individuals with severe autism level 3 require significant support from clinicians, specialists, and family members. Even with significant success most individuals with severe autism are unable to live independently. Some even require 24-hour care throughout their lifetime.

Level 3 autism stands out as the most severe form, requiring substantial support. This level is characterized by severe difficulties in both verbal and nonverbal communication. Individuals at this level face significant challenges in most aspects of life, and may not be able to complete daily tasks independently.

As of yet, there is no indication that autism can be cured. It is also not a disorder that typically disappears on its own. Because autism is viewed as permanent, comprehensive treatment provides a better prognosis.

ASD Level 1: Requiring Support

In level 2 Autism, individuals are moderately affected and can require substantial support due to challenges with socializing, verbal communication, and nonverbal communication. The life expectance for level 2 Autism ranges from 50 to 60 years which is slightly lower than level 1.

ASD is a life-long condition. The earlier autism is diagnosed, the sooner effective treatment interventions, services, and support can be initiated. While level 2 autism cannot be cured, early intervention can lead to a better prognosis and higher quality of life for the autistic individual.

Through mainstream and inclusive education and with the proper support and accommodations, many autistic children can flourish in regular school settings. Inclusive education in mainstream schools has shown numerous benefits.

While some individuals with Level 2 Autism can achieve a level of autonomy, most do not have a completely independent life. A significant percentage of adults with ASD require substantial support and may have an intellectual disability.
